Notes |
- In 1881 age 4, called Mary. In 1891 census with parents next door to Cattell family in Hill Top, called Pollie, age 14.
In 1901 census, age 24, at 87 Edward Street in West Bromwich, with husband.
[Info from Devon Cattell is that the FIELD family owned the 'Thomas Shaw Lion Works' in Hill Top, West Bromwich. It employed about 200 people. It was founded in 1826, closed in 1929.]
BUT Henry had much more modest beginnings as a puddler and then a victualler before appearing by 1891 as a coach spring manufacturer. Had he taken over the business from someone else in his family?
From Black Country History, there are planning applications from Thomas Shaw for the 'Lion Spring Works' in Hill Top West Bromwich in 1859 (house), 1865 (engine stack 60' high), 1876 (plans), 1879 (enlargement of stack). In 1910 and 1912 there were plans for alterations from Thomas SHAW, executor of Henry FIELD.
It was said that the CATTELL brothers worked there, but in 1889 and 1902, William CATTELL was lodging plans for Hill Top Foundry, at 35 Hill Top. This is listed in Kelly Directory for 1880. Suggests that there were two workshops.
1901 census has Henry & Hannah FIELD next door to 35 Hill Top, at Stone House, but Alfred and Mary are at 87 Edward Street in Town Hall Ward.
