Age 4 in 1881 Census West Bromwich. In 1891 age 14 with his widowed mother and her father in High Street, West Bromwich. He is an elementary pupil teacher.
In April 1901 he was in Bristol as a schoolmaster. Married Ellen in August 1901.
In 1906, postcard of Harry C and Joseph; address is 35 Hill Top, West Bromwich. In August 1906, Sussex Express reported that Joseph had been appointed as head of St Ann's school in Lewes at a starting salary of £120. He had an excellent reputation from his previous school in keeping attendance high. This seemed to be a major preoccupation of the education committee.
In 1911 census at Broomfield, nr Chelmsford with widowed mother, wife and daughter. He is head teacher with Essex County Council. Ellen is an assistant teacher. He retired in 1939, awarded MBE, returned to work during the war and then retired again. He was co-opted on to Bucks Education Committee and was the chairman of two local secondary schools.
